Salt is the world’s most popular seasoning. It can be used as its own seasoning or to elevate other flavors. Salt has historically been used in the preservation of foods such as brined meats, pickled vegetables, cheeses, and commercial foods have heavily relied on its use. It is used on most dining room tables as well as the central ingredient in many dishes from appetizers to desserts.

A good home chef knows how to enhance a dish by using salt to compliment other flavors rather than rendering them “salty.” Sea salt comes from the Caribbean (the Cayman Islands), France, Ireland, Italy, and the Northeastern United States (from the Maine and Cape Cod region). France’s sea salt, known as fleur de sel , or “flower of salt,” is widely believed to be the standard of all sea salts. It is also known as sal del mare or sale marino.

Our unrefined, gourmet quality Sea Salt is harvested fresh from Northern French Atlantic coast. When sea salt is harvested, seawater is collected in big trays, and staged outdoors for the sun and wind to evaporate the water, leaving behind the salt. Seawater is packed with 84 natural minerals and natural sea salt contains trace amounts of iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium, manganese, zinc, and iodine.

Many of our customers find natural sea salt to be more flavorful than traditional, refined table salt (which has had these trace minerals removed). You’ll want to keep your salt from absorbing moisture so store it covered and away from humidity.  All you need to make your course salt table friendly is a good salt/pepper mill! Coarse Sea Salt is also excellent for creating your own rubs! If you prefer to put your salt in a shaker we also have Fine Sea Salt!
